How long, O LORD?

 Laura Ingle

Key scripture – “How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?” (Ps 13:1-2).

This Psalm was written by King David and as you can tell it wasn’t easy being King David. His life was a life of extreme highs and extreme lows. He was a shepherd, a political leader, a builder, a prophet, a businessman, a warrior, a lover, a giver, a murderer, an adulterer, a husband, a father, and a worshiper.

In each of these roles he achieved things for God but he also failed God on many occasions. He had a creative-type personality, which is often very passionate. We see this side of him when he unabashedly leaped and danced before the Lord in front of his subjects. “And David danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the horn. As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart.” (2 Sam 6:14-16).

When David wrote his Psalms he was honest about what he was feeling. When he feared his enemies he expressed it. When he could not understand why God was silent, he expressed it as in the Psalm in todays key scripture. However, David never stayed in the place of doubt and despair. He often ended his Psalms like the ones stated below:

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8 ESV).

“For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him with favor as with a shield.” (Psalm 5:12 ESV),

“I will give to the LORD the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the LORD, the Most High.” (Psalm 7:17 ESV).

“O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:9 ESV).

“For the LORD is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face.” (Psalm 11:7 ESV).

“But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me.” (Ps 13:5-6).

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11 ESV).

“As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.” (Psalm 17:15 ESV).

“Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength! We will sing and praise your power.” (Psalm 21:13 ESV),

David choose to focus on who God was and what God had done for him, how God had blessed him, not what God had not done.

If you are waiting for a breakthrough with God, be honest with Him about your hopes and dreams; however, you need to also affirm your faith and trust in Him to accomplish His purposes through your life. Be an overcomer and wait for His answer to your prayers which will be either Yes, No, or Wait. And always, yes always, remember to “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10).

Pray this – Our Precious Heavenly Father, I thank You for always being there for me. Instead of focusing on my problems and circumstances I will hold up the shield of faith and stand firm on my faith in You and Your promises. I will trust in you with all my heart. I will not lean on my own understanding. I will acknowledge You in all my ways and You will make my paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6). I praise and thank You for all the blessings and the good in my life. I will do what the psalmist did and I will say to myself, “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again – my savior and my God!” (Psalm 42:5-6). Help me to “Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” (Psalm 27: 14). Father, let me be like David and begin and end my prayers with praise and worship, and my focus always on Your Goodness, Strength, Love, Kindness, Mercy, Grace and Righteousness. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
