It seems like lying has become a national pastime.

Key scripture – “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13).
It seems like lying has become a national pastime. We lie about everything from our age to our résumé, and we try to justify it by calling it a “little white lie”. We really saw how bad it was during the Presidential campaigns.
But God flat-out hates lying. He hates it because he is a truthful God, a transparent God. He is truth, and when we lie to each other, we are act…ing contrary to his character. In fact, when we lie, we are reflecting the personality of the evil one, Satan, because he is the father of lies.
“There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.” (Proverbs 6:16-19).
God will never ever prompt you to lie. The Holy Spirit will always lead you to the truth, but you have to be willing to follow. The choice is yours to make.
“A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.” (Proverbs 26:28).
I challenge you in the coming days, when you are about to exaggerate or “stretch the truth” or “tell a white lie”, throttle back and take your cue from the Holy Spirit. Listen to what God is telling you and walk the path that glorifies him. Choose the truth, because life is way too short to lie.
“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.” (Proverbs 12:22).
Pray this – Our Precious Heavenly Father, thank you for consistently steering me towards truth. I pray what the Psalmist prayed, “Deliver me, O Lord, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue.” (Psalm 120:2). Help me to chart my course based on that compass. Help me to choose truth, in the all the decisions I face because “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.” (Proverbs 12:19). Forgive me for thinking like the world thinks that a “white lie” or exaggerating the truth is ok. When I do that, that is a sin, and when I choose to sin I choose to suffer. I want the words of my mouth to be pleasing to You so remove far from me falsehood and lying. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
