What it means to wait for The Lord

Key scripture – “Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act.” (Psalm 37:7).
Do we really understand what it means to wait for The Lord?
I know what it means to wait for a phone call, to wait in line, to wait for an answer from a friend or colleague. But have you really thought about what it means for your soul to wait for the Lord.
In order to unpack this command, We need to read Psalm 130:5-6, which says, ”I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning” (NIV).
The Hebrew word for “wait” is qavah, a verb that describes the tension of enduring; waiting; looking eagerly for something to happen; to expect.
To wait for God means to look to Him continually for assistance and salvation, and to trust that He will work things out “for the good of those who love” Him.
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28).
It takes strength, courage, patience, and trust to wait on the Lord rather than to take things into our own hands. “Israel, wait for the Lord! Because faithful love is with the Lord; because great redemption is with our God! He is the one who will redeem Israel from all its sin.”(Psalm 130:7-8 CEB).
As one commentator states, “The ability to wait on the Lord stems from being confident and focused on who God is and in what God is doing. It means confidence in God’s person: confidence in His wisdom, love, timing, understanding of our situation and that of the world. It means knowing and trusting in God’s principles, promises, purposes, and power.”
As we wait on the Lord, we receive strength from Him, and we gain a deeper understanding of the fact that His ways are perfect and higher than our own. He alone can provide the “hope” and “unfailing love” we need! (Psalm 130:7).
You may be asking, what happens if I wait on The Lord?
If you wait patiently on The Lord, you will be delivered out of the pit, the miry bog, which is defined as a swampy muddy ground that you sink in to, that is hard to move around in and impossible to walk in without struggling, and your feet will be planted on solid ground, just like King David experienced when he wrote Psalm 40.
“I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.” (Psalm 40:1-4 ESV).
May we all “be still” today and “wait patiently” for Him to act. (Psalm 37:7).
Pray this – Our Precious Heavenly Father, thank You for hearing my cries for help, for directing my steps, and planting my feet in a wide place so that my feet do not slip. (Psalm 18:36). Give me strength and patience while I wait for You, because when I go off on my own, it always leads to sorrow and regrets. Show me Your path, the one that You have set out for me, and help me to hold fast to your paths. (Psalm 17:5). Thank You for being my help and my shield. Pour Your Spirit on me and give me wisdom while I eagerly and patiently wait for You to work things out. I will keep my eyes focused on Jesus while I am waiting. My eyes are ever toward You Lord, I know that You will pluck my feet out of the net. (Psalm 25:15). In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
