Meditation is different from prayer
Laura Ingle Key scripture – “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14).
Did you know that meditation is different from prayer?
In this Psalm, did you notice that David talks about two things: first there are “the words of my mouth”, and then there is a second thing—“the meditation of my heart”.
…
Meditation is distinct from your words. Both prayer and meditation are crucial to our walk with God, but in spite of this we pray little and meditate almost not at all.
Because of the nature of meditation, it’s really important that we set aside a special time for it, a secluded place where the world won’t intrude, and to get quiet. In this peaceful place we come to God and ask Him to guide our thoughts. You may have a particular Scripture or issue to meditate on, or you may simply focus on God Himself.
Biblical meditation is different from mystical worldly meditation, because it doesn’t involve the emptying of the mind, but rather the filling of the mind with Scripture and the things of God, while inviting God to direct our thoughts about it. “I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation.” (Psalm 119:99).
As you meditate, it’s really good to close your meditation time by jotting down the key thoughts that came out of it and keep talking to God about them throughout your day.
Do you want wisdom and direction from God? If so, spend time with Him in His Word, prayer, and meditation.
Can you take some time right now for meditation? If not, set some time aside later in the day and get alone with God and in His Word, and meditate and pray.
Pray this – Our Precious Heavenly Father, I have come to realize that if I start my day with You in prayer and meditation, and reading Your Word I can make it through anything. I also know that if I do not spend time with You and in Your Word I will never know how Good, Loving, Patient, Kind, and AwesomeYou are. I love You to much to not spend time with You and to get to know You better. Father, teach me how to “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). David’s Psalm is my prayer to You, “Give ear to my words, O Lord, Consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry, My King and my God, For to You I will pray. My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.” (Psalm 5:1-3). Father, I look up to You and I sing praises to You and “I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. May my meditation be sweet to Him; I will be glad in the Lord.” (Psalm 104:33-34). In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
