Small In Your Own Sight

1 Peter 5:6

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.

Humble yourself. So often we’re so quick and glad to brag about our income on our job and where we live and what we drive. Then we are ashamed to admit that we have a real problem. But you can have all of the fixtures and the things of the world and still be miserable under the skin. This is because we spend our time trying to find out how to be happy when we ought to try to know joy. When you humble yourself, you admit that you have discovered that you can not handle this situation by yourself. You can’t take enough pills to bring you back down. You can’t drink enough. You can’t be on enough drugs because once you come down off the high, you will still have the same problem. Humble yourself before the Almighty. Think of yourself in a lowly fashion admitting your neediness.

The mighty hand of God. Now I know that God is busy and we have to admit that he is a busy God because He keeps the earth moving on its axis and He keeps the solar system working together. He keeps all the planets from running and bumping into each other. He is a busy God. Every morning the sun rises and it sets in the evening. Out of six billion folk on planet earth, He visits every one every morning. He wipes the tears from all of our eyes and He answers every prayer. He visits every funeral. Every time a brother or sister gets ready to die, He walks beside them in the valley of the shadow of death.

He’s a busy God, but in spite of his busyness, he still says to us, “Come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. But don’t come to me with a proud look; don’t come to me lifted up in pride. Come to me in humility and with an apologetic heart. Come to me with patient submission and ask me to help you with your situation.” This is something you cannot handle yourself.
