Deception of temptation
Laura Ingle Key scripture- “You see, the lips of a seductive woman speak honey-sweet words; they are smooth like oil and enticing. But in the end, she is bitter, turning the stomach and rotting the soul; she cuts as deep as a double-edged sword. She leads you down a path that can only end in death; her steps lead eventually to the grave. She does not travel the road to life and truth. She follows a wandering path— a rocky, pit-filled road that twists and turns—and she doesn’t even know it… Stay away from her, far away from her path; don’t even go near her door unless you are ready to hand over your reputation to someone else, unless you want to spend the rest of your years at the mercy of some cruel person. If you do, strangers will help themselves to your wealth, and everything you have worked hard to acquire will end up in someone else’s hands. Your life will end with groanings of remorse, of opportunities missed, and your flesh and bones will be eaten up with sorrow, regret for worthless efforts.”(Proverbs 5: 3-4, 8-11 VOICE)
All of us need to stop and think about where our choices will lead us.
God is giving us two main warnings in this Key scripture. The first is about the deception of sexual temptation, which is initially tantalizing and exciting, but at the same time it blinds you to the devastation it will bring into your life. That is why the passage warns us to keep far from the source of sexual temptation.
The second warning is about “the end” that is, the end-result of your choices. Every choice you make, good or bad, is on the way somewhere. Think about the temptations you are facing today. God wants you to consider where that road will take you. If you follow that temptation, will you end up on the road to joy and peace and fruitfulness or on the road to destruction and devastation?
We always need to remember that whatever choice we make we will sow what we reap, whether it is good or bad, we will reap it, and we have to live with the consequences. No one makes a fool of God, and that is why you will harvest what you plant; if you plant good, you will harvest good; if you plant evil, you will harvest evil. The consequences of violating God’s instructions leads to: bitterness, instability, shame, loss, ruin and death. That is why Paul told us in Galatians, “Make no mistake: God can’t be mocked. What you give is what you get. What you sow, you harvest. Those who sow seeds into their flesh will only harvest destruction from their sinful nature. But those who sow seeds into the Spirit shall harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. May we never tire of doing what is good and right before our Lord because in His season we shall bring in a great harvest if we can just persist. So seize any opportunity the Lord gives you to do good things and be a blessing to everyone, especially those within our faithful family.” (Galatians 6:7-10).
If you want to always make the right decision, you have to commit your way to the Lord, and let Him direct you, then you have to trust Him and put all your confidence in Him. If you do that, He has promised that He will do this for you, “He will spread out righteousness for you as a sunrise spreads radiance over the land; He will deliver justice for you into the light of the high sun” (Psalm 37:5-6).
God has great plans for you and better paths for you to travel on, so instead of driving yourself and making your own decisions, move over into the passenger seat and let Him take the wheel, and He will steer you in the right direction and show you the way to go every step of the way. “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left” (Isaiah 30:21).
Pray this – Our Precious Heavenly Father, I commit my ways to You, I trust You with all my heart. I will not lean on my own understanding, knowledge, feelings or emotions, instead I will acknowledge and follow Your Word and Your Ways. I know that if I do that, You will straighten my crooked paths, You will remove the boulders that are blocking my way, and You will go before me and clear a path for me through the thorny brush. I do not want to make decisions that please and satisfy my flesh, because those only leave me empty, and full of shame and guilt. I have hidden Your Word in my heart so that I do not sin against You. “I will fix my mind on Your instructions and my eyes on Your path. I will find joy in Your ordinances; I will remember Your Word forever. I will chase after Your commandments and You will expand my understanding. Grant me understanding so that I can keep Your law and keep it wholeheartedly. Guide me to walk in the way You commanded because I take joy in it.” (Psalm 119:15-16, 32, 34-35). I will obey Your Word, and I will follow You and only You. I will abide in You and You will abide in me. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
