Resting, Not Fretting
Psalm 23:1
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
In Psalm 23:6 David says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” But notice how he started off. The Lord is my shepherd and I shall not want. I won’t have to want for food because You make me to lie down in green pastures. I won’t have to want for forgiveness because You restore my soul. I won’t have to want for protection when I die because yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil. How come? Because God is with me. I don’t have to want for spiritual oil because my cup is running over. I don’t have to want for a banquet because You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. I won’t have to want for comfort because I’ve got goodness on one side and I’ve got mercy on the other side. David said he might have to cry sometimes, but he goes on to say in Psalm 30:5 that weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning.
Ever now and then I go God looking and I can’t find him. Listen to what David says, “I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me and heard my cry.” If you wait on Him, won’t he show up? Psalm 139:13, “For thou has possessed my reins; thou has covered me in my mother’s womb.” Before you were born, God was looking at you. When your mother almost had a miscarriage He held you. When you talked about getting rid of your baby, He changed your mind. God stamped a stamp of approval on that child. Psalm 37:1 “Fret not thyself because of evildoers.” ‘Fret not.’ sounds like the words of a brave man to me. Neither envy the workers of iniquity for they shall soon be cut off. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and he will give you the desire of your heart. Trust in the Lord; Commit your way to the Lord. Rest in the Lord.
