Fools And Fugitives

Genesis 3:7

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

In Genesis 2:25 the man and his wife were naked and they were not ashamed. But after they sinned, their conscience bothered them and they were ashamed. Sin brought about change. They sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons. Sin really makes a fool out of you because who with any sense would try to hide from God with fig leaves made into aprons barely covering up the front? And they are hiding from God not knowing which direction he may come from. The fig leaf aprons wouldn’t help much if he arrived in the back. Sin makes a fool out of us in other ways. Some fathers will work hard all the week, spend every dime on some liquor and then go out and try to borrow enough money to feed his children. That’s a fool.

Sin also brings about separation. It makes us fugitives, running and hiding from someone. Before they sinned, Adam and Eve enjoyed sweet communion everyday with God when He came walking in the garden in the cool of the day. Adam would be there waiting with Mrs. Eve. But as soon as they sinned, they ran from God; notice God did not run from them, they ran from God.

Sin brings about shame, separation, self-defense, sinners, and sorrow. First Adam and Eve experienced shame. Then they were separated from God’s presence and their beautiful home. Adam began to defend himself and blame his sin on someone else. They had children, bringing forth more sinners. Women experience sorrow resulting from this sin through the pain of childbirth. Man could no longer eat the lovely fruits of the trees, but had to toil and eat from the ground, which was cursed with thistles and thorns. Man would have to sweat and toil for even this.
