She Was Wanted

John 4:7

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

Jesus was waiting for a particular woman to come to the well for water. He knew the woman’s record. She had been married five times and was now living with a man who was not her husband. We don’t know the specifics of her story, but this is what I think could have happened in her life. I think the very first marriage she had was a mistake; she did not marry the man based upon a gift from God. She was attractive and this fellow had a good line. A nice looking cat. Since looks change, this marriage was soon over. She was hurt over the fact that this fellow wouldn’t stay with her. So she just grabbed the second fellow to try to heal her wounds and took the bitterness out on him. The third guy thought he could help her come out of her shell and So she accepted him on his offer. He tried a couple of years and gave up. The fourth guy had some money but soon all he saw was the inside of her hand, so he left. The fifth guy was twenty years younger. It wasn’t very long before he saw an old woman and he put her down. Now it’s the sixth man. She said, “I am through with marriage. I’m just going to shack it out.”

Hence Jesus is sitting on the well—a well sitting on a well. Because of her bad reputation, this woman came to the well at noon, after others had already gone. Jesus approached her first and said, “Give me a drink of water.” What I detect about Jesus is that he will always approach you first. I like that. He doesn’t wait until we come to him; he comes to us. If Jesus had waited for us to come to him, most of us would never be saved. He makes provisions for us. He sends out the invitations for us to come to him. Although Jesus really didn’t need any water, he gave the woman an opportunity to feel needed. The woman was an outcast and lost, but Jesus came looking for her.
