The Greatest Day In History

Matthew 28:1

And the end of the Sabbath as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

Looking back, I must admit that there are many great days now in the archives of history. Great was the day of creation, when God came from nowhere, stood on the platform of nothing, reached back through nowhere, got something while standing on nothing, and slung it all into existence. The S-U-N started shining; the moon began to glow; the stars began glittering; fish started swimming; birds started flying; roses started blooming and blossoming; fruit came on trees. And great was the day when God ended his work and saw that it was good. Great was the day when Abraham finally stood over little Isaac, saw that the child he had waited 100 years for had finally made his arrival. Great was the day when Noah had spent 120 years building an ark for God. When the flood was over and he was able to step out of the ark with his family; great was that day.

Great was the day when Elijah prayed on Mount Carmel and God answered by sending fire from heaven. Great was the day when Jesus the Christ was born of a virgin in Bethlehem of Judea. Great was the day when Jesus went into the temple at the age of twelve and baffled the minds of the professors. He talked like an old man, but had a young body. Great was the day when Jesus responded “I must be about my father’s business.” Great was the day when He ascended the mountain and met Moses and Elijah after He was transfigured right before the disciples’ eyes. Great and dark was the day when Jesus finally arrived at the hill called Calvary to conquer sin, death, and the grave. But the greatest day of them all was resurrection morning, when the tombstone was rolled back and Jesus rose from the grave, the first begotten of the dead. Resurrection morning – that is the day of celebration!
