A Real Revelation
Luke 9:19
They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the prophets is risen again.
Whom do men say that I, the Son of Man, am? Peter said, “Well we keep getting a lot of rumors, but they’re all good. Some call you Elijah because of your ability to pray” Elijah was a great prayer. You remember he prayed one day and heaven opened and it rained during the drought. He said, “Some call you John the Baptist because of your preaching ability.” John was an excellent preacher. He could preach so well that folk would leave the comfort of the pews in the temple and go down to Jordan just to hear John shout, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
But some called him Jeremiah. Jeremiah was a weeper. Jesus cried over the city of Jerusalem. He was seen weeping at the grave of Lazarus. So some say, “You are Jeremiah.” Then Jesus said, “That sounds good, but whom do you say that I am?” Peter was anxious to answer. “You’re the Christ of the living God.” Jesus wanted to set Peter straight so Peter knew he was not the one who came up with this. Jesus said, “Flesh and blood did not reveal this unto you, Peter, but you have been shown this by my heavenly Father. Now you are Petros, a rock. However, upon the rock of the truth I will build my church and the very gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit at that time. He proclaimed the same unusual statement that we have to make when we accept Christ as our personal Savior. But only three verses down, Jesus had to turn around and rebuke Peter for being a tool of Satan. You can be really caught in the spirit this minute and be in a whole different mindset later. Lots of times you can be so caught up in the Spirit that you think nothing can ever distract you. The devil likes to catch you at those moments. Don’t think that the devil will leave you alone after a Holy Spirit encounter.
