All Things

Key scripture – “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.” (1 Corinthians 6:12).

If you want to be a victor in the race God has for you, you must learn the discipline of laying aside some weights, some of the things that are dragging you down. Many times these weights are good things in our lives, but good things are bad things when they keep us from doing the best things.

Life would be simple if it were a choice between good and bad. But typically it’s a choice between good and best.

For example we all need to eat to sustain our bodies, but when we eat to the point of becoming a glutton that is not good for us. We also do not want to be brought under the power of food so that it becomes an idol.

Our verse says “all things are not expedient.” When you think of the word “expedient,” think of the word “expedition.” You are going somewhere, and if something doesn’t speed you on your way it’s excess baggage and you need to get rid of it.

Ask God, “Are there legitimate, lawful things in my life that are keeping me from running the race You’ve given me?” Whatever He reveals to you, ask Him for the discipline and power to lay them aside!

Pray this – My Precious Heavenly Father, show me what is slowing me down and give me the courage and strength to lay it down.
I do not want to be dependent on anything but You. Even if it is lawful, if it is not helpful it has to go. Even if it is lawful, if it does not build up my trust and faith in You, it has to go. Even if it is lawful, if I am a slave to it, it has to go. Even if it is lawful, if it is becoming an idol, it has to go. “Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?” (Romans 6:16). I want to do everything to the glory of God. “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31). I want to run the race that you have given me, and when I finish, I want to finish strong. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen
