Mark 10:17

…Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

Don’t miss this. What can I do to inherit eternal life? This messes up a lot of folk because folk come to church wanting to know, “What can I do to be saved? I want to know what can I do to get eternal life.” We think salvation is received by what we are doing. You see, if you do something to get saved then you can stop doing it and be unsaved. No, you don’t spell it D-O. You spell it D-O-N-E. It was done on Calvary’s cross. Salvation is a gift. John 10:28 I gave unto them eternal life. If it’s a gift you didn’t earn it. If you earned it, it’s not a gift. And since I didn’t do anything to get saved, I can’t do anything to stay saved. I’m staying saved by the power of God. He paid the price.

But the man kept pressing Jesus. He said, “You’ve got to let me do something to be saved. The Lord said, “What’s written in the law?” Jesus said, “Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not defraud. Thou shalt honor thy mother and thy father.” Jesus quoted the last five commandments, which deal with man’s relationship to man The first five deal with man’s relationship to God. Jesus said, “How are you faring with your fellow man?” Hear the young man’s answer, “All these have I kept from my youth up.” You’ve got to give the him credit for being a pretty good young man.

Then Jesus looked at him and said, “One thing thou lacketh.” What is your one thing that stands between you and God – something in your life that’s kind of got you wrapped up and you can’t give God your best. Jesus said, “Sell all you have and give it to the poor.” Your God is your gold. You need to do a little switching from your gold to your God. And the Bible said that man walked away with a hung down head. I don’t know what happened to that man but he left Jesus that day without eternal life.
