Dreams Of Doom And Delight
Genesis 40:2-3
And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers. And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was put.
While in prison, Joseph ran into a butler that had worked under King Pharaoh. He also ran into a baker that had served at the king’s table. One night, the butler had a dream, a very unusual dream. He dreamed about a vine with three branches giving great clusters of grapes. The butler said that it troubled him because from the grapes he received juice and filled the cup of Pharaoh. He said, “I don’t understand it.” Then the baker said, “You know, I too had a dream. I was walking through the palace of Pharaoh with three baskets on my head. The top basket was full of meat and the birds ate the meat while I was trying to get to Pharaoh’s table. So Joseph said, “Look let me interpret your dreams for you.”
“You dreamed of a vine with three branches. God is letting you know that in three days Pharaoh will come and take you back to serve in his palace.” Then Joseph said to the baker, “In three days Pharaoh is going to come and put a noose around your neck and hang you.” Now the baker hadn’t told his dream until he heard the interpretation of the butler’s dream. Some people won’t tell you what’s happening in their life if they think it might bring doom. They always look for deliverance. But you’ve got to bear in mind that the same Bible that tells you what salvation will do will also tell you what sin will do. The same Bible that tells you about heaven will tell you about hell. The same Bible that tells you about the love of God will also tell you about the wrath of God. Most of us like to hear the love but don’t want to hear about the wrath. And sure enough, in three days Pharaoh had a birthday celebration. He went and had the butler released, but he hung the baker.
