Matthew 25:5
While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
These virgins all appeared to be alive. But at the showdown, the difference will be known. We may all look alike just now; we all act like Christians; we all sit like we’ve been born again.
The old folk used to say cream, real cream would rise to the top. And the Lord is the One who will do the separating. Jesus said, “Let the wheat and the tares grow together.” Why does He allow that? When the plants are young and tender, they all look just alike. But once they get grown, the wheat ears get heavy and the wheat starts bowing down. The heavier the wheat gets the lower it bows. But the tare, the older it gets the more it lifts its head. In other words, it shows off more the older it gets. The wheat starts hiding itself. Let them both grow together; Jesus will evaluate the situation. So the ten virgins slumbered and slept.
Now there were two different kinds of sleepiness going on. The foolish virgins were sleeping ignorantly, like sinners sleep ignorantly. They brag about what they possess without realizing that they’re walking around on a spider web that could break at any moment, possibly two seconds from eternal damnation. I don’t see where no body that’s unsaved ought to be happy because you could go to hell at any moment. Not only did the foolish slumber and sleep but the wise also slept. Did you know the church is sleeping too? Let’s look to Jonah as a witness. Jonah went down in the ship and went to sleep. The storm came and everybody on board was praying to their gods, but their gods couldn’t stop the storm because their gods had eyes and couldn’t see; their gods had ears and could not hear. The only one on ship that could get a prayer through was Jonah and he was down in the ship asleep. I’m afraid today the only ones that can get a prayer through just might be asleep, maybe sitting on a pew with their eyes open.
