Genesis 39:5
And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
Potiphar’s wife had repeatedly asked Joseph to lie with her, and he repeatedly refused. She was determined, so she asked him to just lie next to her. When he wouldn’t lie with her or by her, she decided to lie on him. She deliberately made up this stuff to destroy a person who was living for the Lord. When Potiphar heard his wife’s story, his wrath was kindled. He became angry. Not once did it say that he got angry with Joseph. His anger may have been more with his wife than it was with Joseph. Nevertheless, Joseph was the one who ended up in jail.
Potiphar was no fool. Genesis 39:3 says that Potiphar saw that the Lord was with Joseph and made all that he did to prosper in his hand. Potiphar was smart enough to observe Joseph’s standing with the Lord. He had put Joseph in charge. If he watched Joseph, guess who else he watched. He watched his wife. This was not the first time this woman had done this. Some folk you fool, but sometimes you don’t fool your own spouse. There are indications in the text that show Potiphar really didn’t believe his wife’s story, but he compromised.
So Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, the same prison where the king’s prisoners were bound. Genesis 39:21-22 tells us the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison, who committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison. It seems to say that regardless of what a person puts on you, if the Lord is with you the world can do you do harm.
