God Uses Busy People
Exodus 3:1
Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock, to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
When God calls a person, that person is usually already-busy doing something. Very seldom does God select a person that is merely sitting by day dreaming and building mansions in the sky. Moses kept the flock of Jethro, meaning that he was extremely busy. Merely watching sheep may sound like a very easy job, but in Psalm 25, David says the shepherd’s job is a very sensitive one. The first thing a shepherd must do is to make the sheep lie down in green pastures. Shepherds know that sheep will not lie down if there are things disturbing the sheep such as parasites and insects. If a sheep is hungry, he will not lie down. So the shepherd had to prepare the pasture for the sheep. Also, sheep must be lead beside still water because they cannot drink running water. A good shepherd leads his sheep in the path of righteousness; he has to put the sheep on the right track.
God majors in calling people that are already doing something. When God called Abraham, he was busy taking care of his father. When He called Joshua and Caleb, they were busy working with Moses. When He called Peter, James, John, and Andrew, they were busy fishing. When He called Matthew, he was busy collecting taxes. If you’re lazy and doing nothing, you’re not much good for anything. You can actually go to hell just for doing nothing. The rich man spoken of in Luke chapter 16 wasn’t doing wrong. He fared sumptuously every day and walked around dressed in purple and fine linen. But he died and went to hell for doing nothing.
God is looking for busy people who are willing to do something for the Lord. Moses was busy keeping the flock.
