Key scripture – “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away” (Hebrews 2:1).
Have you ever been talking to someone and something interrupts your train of thought, then when you try to finish your conversation you cannot remember what you were saying and what your original point was? That is what the author of Hebrews means when he uses the word drift in today’s Key scripture.
So what exactly is it that we’ve heard tha…t we need to pay attention to?
Hebrews 1 taught us that Jesus is better than anything that we leave behind to follow Him. He’s ranked higher than the angels. The Father acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, and His message is greater than any message that came before Him. (Hebrews 1:1-13).
That is why we are being warned in Hebrews Chapter 2: Don’t miss Jesus! Pay attention. Otherwise, the message might drift on by.
This imagery behind the word drift is that of a boat passing by its destination. Plato used this word to indicate something that has slipped from one’s memory. Plutarch, a historian, used the word to describe a ring slipping off one’s finger.
Drift is a frightening word because the loss is happening imperceptibly. We don’t even know we’re drifting. You don’t realize you’ve lost it until it’s gone.
God is telling us, through the author of Hebrews, to pay attention. He wants us alert. He wants us hearing and responding to the Gospel. He wants us to reach the destination.
So the question for you is: Have you responded to the Gospel? Do you believe what you have heard? Are you walking by faith and not by sight? Are you living in obedience to the Word of God?
If you have been drifting away from God and His Word, get on your knees and pray. Talk to God, repent, and ask Him to show you the way back to Him and He will. God is always faithful even when we are faithless. (2 Timothy 2:13).
Pray this – Our Precious Heavenly Father, I do not want to drift away from You. I want to stay close to You and be a hearer and doer of the Word. Help me to always remember what Jesus sacrificed to give me eternal life. Through Your Word, give me the wisdom and ynderstanding that I need to live out each day so that I walk in Your way securely and I do not stumble. Father, You’re better than anything that I have left behind. I delight greatly in Your Commandments, my heart is steadfast because I trust in You, I will not be afraid of bad news because my heart is secure, I will triumph over my enemies because You watch over me, You keep me safe from all of life’s evils, You hold me firmly in place, You never take Your eyes off me, You never rest or go to sleep, You keep me so close that Your shadow is a cooling protective shade over me, and I find complete rest in Your shadow. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
