Lives Of Faithfulness
Luke 1:7
And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
Although Elisabeth and Zacharias were Jewish people walking in all the commandments of the Lord, they were not perfect. There are no perfect people who live on planet earth. Nevertheless they were faithful to God. No person could finger them openly. They were doing all that would be pleasing to God. And because of them being such faithful people, God had some things in store for them.
Despite their righteousness, there were problems in the house. Know that living a holy life does not exclude problems. You can live as holy as you possibly can, but the difficult dilemmas and circumstances will show up. I remember hearing a story of two boys that got in trouble. One boy was righteous and the other one was unrighteous. When the unrighteous boy was in trouble, somebody told him to hold on and his response was, “I have nobody to hold on to.” But when you are living a righteous life and problems come, you do have a problem solver. I would rather have Jesus and nobody else than to have everybody else and no Jesus. He is there to hold on to.
The problem in the house was they had no child. In the society we live in, that does not appear to be a problem. But in that society, people believed that if there was no boy in the house, then that the home was cursed. In order for the house to be blessed, a boy child had to be born. Elisabeth not only lacked a boy child, but she did not have any children at all. She was barren. She could not bring forth a child. And they were both now well stricken in age.
God, however, had not forgotten their lifetime of faithfulness from their youth. He wanted to reward that faithfulness. It’s good to take your life while you’re young and use it productively and positively for the Lord. Serve God in your youth. He will not forget you!
