Prisoners Of The Lord
Acts 16:16
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.
The scene opened with a young lady. Luke does not give us her name; he just calls her a damsel, a notorious psychic. In our day she would have a 1-900 number. The Bible says she had made much gain for her masters. Evidently it was someone else’s business; she was just bringing in the dough. So this girl had a spirit that knew how to deal with people looking for this kind of lore. Then a strange thing happened; she encountered two broke preachers, Paul and Silas, who were on a missionary journey for the Lord. They were on their way to another destination when this unnamed person got caught in the crossfire of the Gospel and her power departed. When her masters saw that the hope of their gains were gone they took Paul and Silas to the marketplace and accused them before the people and placed them in prison.
So Paul and Silas were in jail because of the Bible. Paul said he was in jail so much until he just named himself a prisoner of the Lord. A prisoner doesn’t have to worry about a place to stay, because you will have a roof over your head. You don’t have worry about a place to eat. Medical coverage is also provided for you. When you are a prisoner for the Lord you have the same benefits, because when you’re saved and born again you don’t have to worry about a place to lay your head. The God I serve will make sure there’s a roof over your head. When you’re saved you don’t have to worry about food to eat because He will supply your every need. You don’t have to worry about security guards walking beside you because Psalm 91:11 says He gives his angels charge over us to keep us in all our ways. Their mission landed them in prison.
