The Correct Crowd
1 John 1:3
That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
Our fellowship. Fellowship is the Greek word koinonia which means the fellowship of the believers. Notice this fellowship is horizontal, because he said you have fellowship with us. However most of us try to have our relationship vertical. We spend a lot of our time trying to have to a vertical relationship with God. We try to eliminate having a horizontal fellowship with our brother. Now you may socialize with unbelievers, but you really cannot have fellowship with unbelievers. You might be in their company but you’re on a different level than they are. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? Don’t let saved marry unsaved.
But the Lord says, “Look, you’ve got to get it right with your brother.” You heard Jesus when He prayed in Matthew 6, “And after this manner pray ye our father.” Your prayer has to be horizontal. Before it goes up it has to go out to your brother. You have to have your brother in mind when you get down on your knees. He said pray our – horizontal. Father – vertical. You cannot be vertically right and horizontally wrong. If you’re going to have it right with God, you’ve got to have it right with your brother.
Truly our fellowship is with the father. When you get in with the God family, your fellowship goes out, but it also goes up. When you are in fellowship, you don’t run from God you run to God. When you step out of his will, you stop fellowship with God. It doesn’t matter what isn’t going right in the Church of the Living God, when you’re in fellowship with God you want to be with God’s people.
