The Lord is my portion

Key scripture – “I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him. The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord” (Lamentations 3:24-26 NIV).

Lamentations is defined as; to feel, show, or express sorrow, grief or regret – to mourn deeply. When you are lamenting over something and you are down and discouraged, and your portions on earth are perishing and slipping away, you have nothing to fear because God is your portion forever.

Having God as your portion is enough to counterbalance all your troubles and make up for all your losses. Whatever you are robbed of here on earth, your portion is safe because God is your portion. This is what you can depend on. You can rest, and not be fretful or anxious because you are satisfied with God. You can hope in him, stay yourself upon him, and encourage yourself in him, when all other support and encouragement fail. In the midst of your Lamentations, it is your duty to make God the portion of your soul, to make use of Him as your portion, and to take comfort from Him.

Those who have God as their portion will find it is not in vain to trust him. He is good to those who do so. He is particularly good to the soul that waits for Him, that seeks Him. “The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him.” (Verse 25).

While your trouble is prolonged, and your deliverance is deferred, you must patiently wait for God and for His deliverance. While you are waiting for Him by faith, you must seek Him in prayer and in His Word, because seeking God will help you while you are waiting. If we wait and seek, God will be gracious and He will show us His marvelous loving kindness. “It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” (Verse 26).

While you are waiting on God, be still, silent and quiet, don’t quarrel with God or get angry with Him or fret because of your circumstances. Instead walk by faith not by sight. “He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10).

Even though the difficulties that lie in your way seem insurmountable and impossible to overcome, and even though it has been going on a long time, you need to keep submitting to His Will, without protest.

“Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” (Psalm 16:5-8).

If we call this to mind and keep our focus on The Lord, then we can always have hope and know that everything works together for good for those that love God and are called according to His purpose.

Pray this – Our Precious Heavenly Father, You are my portion. You are all I need. My trust and my confidence is in The Lord. So many times instead of standing still and waiting on You, I have run ahead and tried to fix the problem, only to make it worse. Help me to follow what Moses said, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:13-14). If I stand still and wait on You, and I will see the great thing that You are about to do before my eyes! (1 Samuel 12:16). No matter how long it takes before I see my deliverance, I will wait patiently for You, because my hope and trust is in You alone. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
