The name of the Lord

  Laura Ingle

Key scripture – “Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now and forever more.” (Psalms 113:2),

The first thing you learn about someone when you meet them is their name. Names are important not only because they distinguish us from other people, but also because they identify who we are. The same is true with God.

But because God is so great, one name could never identify all of who He is. So as you peruse the Scriptures, you will find a number of names that identify God.

Names like:

Elohim – the Creator. The God who said “Let there be”.
Yahweh – the covenant keeping God. The God who makes promises and does not back away from it. The God you can depend on.
El Shaddai – the “Lord God Almighty.”. The God who does whatever he wants to do. The God who is more than enough.
Abba- Father
El Elyon – The Most High.
El Roi – The Lord that Sees.
Yahweh Tsidkenu – The Lord our Righteousness.
Yahweh Mekoddishkem – The Lord our Sanctification.
Yahweh Shammah – The Lord is There.
Yahweh Shalom – The Lord is peace.
Yahweh Rafa – The Lord is your healer.
Yahweh Jireh – The Lord your provider.
Yahweh Nisi – The Lord your Banner.
Yahweh Rohi -The Lord is your shepherd.

These names point to God’s ability to meet not just some of our needs, but ALL of our needs and His desire to be our guide.

So often in life we come to a crossroads and ask ourselves questions like: “Should I take this job?” or, “Should I marry that person?” or, “How should I handle this problem?” More often than not, we rely on our own intuition and strength to make these decisions. But those are the times that we should turn to God, because when you look at the Names of the Lord, not only will you recognize and acknowledge His power and strength; but you will also see His desire to guide you down the right path in life.

So call on the Name of the Lord whenever you have a question in life, no matter how small you think it is. Recognize the power of your guiding Shepherd to lead you down the right path, and discover the freedom that comes from following His voice to safety.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.” (Psalm 23:1-6).

Pray this – Our Precious Heavenly Father, thank you for being my guide, provider, shepherd, defender, friend, healer, protector, peace, and for always being there to help me navigate through life. I don’t want to ever live life without You. I need You to show me how to walk upright and blameless, and to lead me down paths of righteousness. Father, every time I speak Your Name, I am praising You for who You are. From east to west, from dawn to dusk, I will keep lifting up all of my praises to You. Today, I choose to turn to You, and seek answers and direction from You first, not after I have talked to everyone else about what to do, and I will follow You wherever You lead me. You are, I AM WHO I AM! In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
