When being thankful is the last thing you feel like doing

  Laura Ingle

Key scripture- “Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving And pay your vows to the Most High; Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me” (Psalm 50:14-15).

Plenty of occasions exist in life when being thankful is the last thing you feel like doing, when nothing seems good or gratitude-worthy. In Psalm 50, the psalmist instructs us to call upon God in the day of trouble, to offer God a sacrifice of thanksgiving. Even when nothing in your life looks praiseworthy, we are to continue to fulfill our vows to the Lord and praise Him for what He is doing that we cannot see and what He will do. That may seem strange, but we should give thanks in everything, knowing that God is still God, and He uses all things in this fallen world to accomplish His purposes.

Begin to track the ways God is using the hard circumstances in your life. Perhaps they’re causing you to become more dependent on Him or to call upon Him in prayer or to exercise faith in His promises. When we call upon our Lord “in the day of trouble,” with minds set on glorifying Him, He does marvelous things in the midst of our pain and sorrow.

Today, I want you to put your gratitude in action and make a list of all the difficult things in your life. Spell them out, as detailed as you want. Then offer it all back to the Lord as a sacrifice of thanksgiving, trusting the Lord to work through your life and bring you to a place where you can glorify Him. Thank Him by faith that He can use each of these situations as a means to display His glory in You and through you, and that He will work all things together for your good.

Pray this – Our Precious Heavenly Father, You are worthy of praise even in my day of trouble. I bring ______ before You and I give it to You as a sacrifice of thanksgiving. I trust You to work in me and through me and to bring me to a place so that I can glorify You. In the midst of my trouble I will serve You with gladness; I will come before You with joyful singing. I enter Your gates with thanksgiving and Your courts with praise. I give thanks to You, I bless Your name. For You are good; Your lovingkindness is everlasting and Your faithfulness is to all generations. (Psalm 100:1-5). I proclaim, “From my distress I called upon the Lord; The Lord answered me and set me in a large place. The Lord is for me; I will not fear; What can man do to me?… It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man” (Psalm 118:5-6,8). I give to You all that weighs heavy on me today, and I commit to trusting You with it all, because You have promised to deliver me, I praise You and glorify Your name. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
