Where Enemies Belong

Psalm 57:1

Be merciful unto me, 0 God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee.

David is in a cave standing against the wall along with all of his men, his servants, and his army. They are all standing there holding their breath because they know the king is in the neighborhood. And the king who is Davids enemy is so sure that David is caught that he lies down and takes a nap. God says to David, “It’s time to escape.” David walks out by King Saul who is sound asleep. The soldiers are asleep. The soldiers of David say, “It’s time to take Sauls life.” Instead, David reaches down with his sword and cuts off a tiny bit of the coat of Saul and carries a piece of the material with him. His enemy is down and instead of destroying his enemy, he takes off a piece of his coat.

When you love the Lord, you can be sure of your security. Then David left and hid under a rock. Saul woke up discovering that David was no longer in the cave. When Saul came out looking for him, David said, Saul, look at the tip end of your garment. There is a piece cut off. I could have taken your life last night, but instead I spared your life. Even when you have your enemies at bay, don’t try to destroy them. The Bible says to pray for your enemies. Do good to them that hate you and bless them that curse you. When you treat an enemy like an enemy treats you, you’re just like the enemy. But you’ve got to be bigger and better than your enemy.

So David is still on the run. He’s out of the cave, but he penned this Psalm. Be merciful unto me O God for my soul trusts in thee. David didn’t have any confidence in Saul because he was still after him. His trust was in God. Don’t have your trust in a government that’s wishy washy. If you’re going to have trust in somebody or something, let it be in the Lord, a true and a living God. Then put your enemies in God’s hands.
