You Can’t Get Away

Psalm 139:7-9

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

Where can I flee from thy presence? David gives three directions people think of to try to get away from God. One way is through death. Some people think that when you die it’s all over. That’s why people commit suicide. No, it’s not over when you take your life. When you take your life, you rush to stand before an angry God. At almost every funeral somebody will say, At least they ain’t got to suffer no more.” Well that depends on their relationship with God.

Another way is through distance – If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea. No, if I start off in the east and I make my way over to the west, when I get there I will discover it was God’s hand. Well, if it’s trouble you’re running from, it’s going to be wherever you go. If you are tired of God, he’s going to be wherever you end up. I have discovered something; you don’t have to move for God to bless you. God can bless you in the spot you’re in right now. So you cannot leave him with death or get away from him through distance.

Neither can you hide from him in the darkness for the darkness and the light are both alike to the Lord. Even if I make my bed in hell, he says he’s there. Now you wouldn’t think the Lord would be in hell. Somehow we put it out that hell is run by the devil. No such thing. The devil doesn’t run hell; he isn’t even there yet. Where is he? If there’s a worship service, he’s there. He prowls about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour or trip up. So if you’re running from the Lord and you’ve never accepted him as Savior, one day you’ll still have to face him because if you go to hell, he’ll be right there as a judge. And he will be So awesome when people see him they will run until death falls on them. Even though he’s merciful, he’s also just.
